Job Description and Responsibilities

Interpreters at the African Union Commission are responsible for:

• Providing simultaneous, consecutive, and liaison interpretation during AU meetings, conferences, and diplomatic events.
• Ensuring accuracy and clarity while converting spoken concepts between languages.
• Consulting AU terminology references for consistent language use.
• Translating documents when required.
• Staying updated on language developments.
• Using computer-aided translation (CAT) tools and Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI) technology.
• Working effectively under pressure in a multicultural environment.
• Maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and teamwork.

Qualifications and Experience

• Education: Master’s degree in Interpretation, Translation, Modern Languages, Linguistics, or related fields.
• Experience: Minimum 7 years practical interpretation experience; some positions require up to 12 years.
• Languages: Excellent command of at least two AU working languages (English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Kiswahili). Knowledge of a third language is an advantage.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency with CAT tools and RSI platforms.
• Attributes: Ability to work under pressure, strong teamwork, professionalism, cultural sensitivity.

Contract and Remuneration

• Contract: Three-year renewable contract with a one-year probation period.
• Salary: Approx. US$ 42,879 per annum (P4 grade), plus allowances (housing, education, post adjustment up to 46%).
